Some Cool Sites for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month (the Rest of the Year, too)
The Pearl of Wisdom Campaign to Eliminate Cervical Cancer - NCWO and a number of affiliates are partners in this campaign. January kicks off its Take the Pearl Pledge promotion which asks women to learn the facts about cervical cancer prevention, take the Pearl Pledge and protect themselves and the women they love from this preventable disease. The goal is to reach 4,070 pledges - the same number of women who were expected to die from cervical cancer in 2009 - before Mother's Day (May 9, 2010).
Be Confident! HPV Education Campaign - Association of Women's Health, Obstetric & Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), an NCWO affiliate, is kicking off this new campaign this month (in English and Spanish) to spark conversations on the subject with young women and their parents using a comic book style brochure and poster.
HealthyWomen, also an NCWO affiliate, features two articles on its site on cervical cancer and how to prevent it in its Reproductive & Pelvic Health Center.
Reality Check: What Young Women Don't Know About Cervical Cancer is the campaign that the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation is kicking off this month. It was developed in response to the fact that cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. in women in their twenties and thirties. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of cervical cancer and motivate young women to talk to their healthcare professional about how to protect their cervical health now and for the future.
Promise to Me is an initiative created by Hologic, a company focusing on the health needs of women, to"empower women to make their health a priority and encourage them to pass the message on to other women in their lives." For Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Hologic has formed a partnership with the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC). Every time "the promise" is passed on (through the Promise Me site) to another women, the company will make a donation to help fund cervical cancer screening for uninsured or underinsured women. You can also view NCCC's Get Involved video on the site.
